Installing a Green Dragon on an ATV

An ATV also makes a very good platform to attach a Green Dragon dispenser. ATVs can access areas that cannot be reached with a pickup truck. The dispenser was specifically designed to operate on this type of rough terrain.

For an ATV, the Green Dragon is best mounted to the rear cargo rack with the arc of fire facing to the rear. Loosen the bolts that secure the mount angles to the unistrut nuts. Align each unistrut nut and bracket with one of the cargo rack tubes by pushing in on the nut and sliding it in the channel to the desired location. Tighten the bolt and install a U-bolt to secure the angle to the rack tube.

Depending on the make and model of the ATV, the tubes in the rack may go side to side or front to rear. For cargo racks with side to side tubes, use the unistrut nuts and mount angles in the short end channels of the Green Dragon frame. For front to back tubes, move the mount angles to the unistrut nuts located on the long side channels of the Green Dragon frame.

On an ATV, the propellant source is going to be a gas bottle which can be a challenge to mount. There are two options for mounting the bottle. The simplest is to mount the bottle on the front rack of the ATV. If using carbon dioxide, the valve end of the bottle must be about six inches higher than the other end to ensure that none of the liquid can get into the valve. For compressed air, the bottle can be mounted horizontal.

Another option is to mount the bottle vertically behind the machine. This can be done by making a base plate that attaches to the ATV hitch. The bottle stands on the base plate and the upper end can be secured to the Green Dragon frame for stability. On larger ATVs which use a square receiver, this is an easy customization.

There are two possible sources of power for the dispenser on an ATV. Some ATV's have a 12V utility outlet. The Green Dragon can be powered from this with a suitable adapter, but these plugs often come out on rough terrain. The preferred method is to attach the power cables directly to the posts on the ATV battery.

The biggest issue with operating a Green Dragon from an ATV is the remote control. The standard remote control for the Green Dragon is not well suited to an ATV. There is no practical place to mount the remote control and operate the ATV safely. A special remote control to mount on the handlebars could be used, but most ATVs already have the handlebars loaded with switches and there is no room for more.

The best option is to use a footswitch remote control. The Green Dragon has an optional footswitch remote that connects to the control panel in place of the standard remote. The optional remote has a small switchbox for the auto/manual mode switch. Attached to that box is a length of cable connected to a foot operated trigger switch. The trigger switch can be mounted to the running board of the ATV allowing hands free operation of the dispenser.
