Installing a Green Dragon in a Truck

A pickup truck makes an excellent vehicle platform from which to operate a Green Dragon. Trucks are readily available, and have lots of room for extra spheres and glycol. Some service trucks may already have a compressed air system installed negating the requirement for compressed gas bottles.

For a pickup truck, the dispenser is best installed against the tailgate using the shipping crate as a mount system. Close the tailgate and place the crate against it. If using a compressed gas bottle, check that the bolts located in the side of the crate are facing into the truck and rotate the crate if required. Secure the crate against the tailgate by using tie down straps between the handles on the crate and the rear corners of the truck box.

Once the crate is secure, install the Green Dragon on the top of the crate with the arc of fire to the sides and rear of the vehicle. Mount the dispenser to the crate by bolting its frame angles to the threaded inserts which are installed in the top of the crate. If using a compressed gas bottle, secure the bottle to the crate using the two tank hoops which can be bolted to the nutserts in the side of the crate.

There are several options for supplying 12VDC power to the Green Dragon. The first is to use the “utility socket” formerly known as the cigarette lighter. You will need to purchase a utility plug and then connect it to the power adapter supplied with the machine. You want a plug rated for at least five amps and preferably without a fuse so that if something goes wrong, the circuit breaker on the Green Dragon trips without burning out a fuse.

This is the easiest method and works with every existing truck, but it does have some disadvantages. On most trucks, when the ignition key is turned off, the utility outlet goes dead which will shut down the Green Dragon in mid operation and could lead to a fire. Another problem is that the utility socket is in the cab and the dispenser is located in the back of the box. This means that the power cable must be routed through the passenger window or sliding rear windows if equipped.

The second option is to connect the power adapter directly to the battery of the vehicle. This has the advantage that the dispenser always has power and will not shut down when the vehicle ignition key is turned off. You will need to purchase a pair of alligator clips similar to those found on a battery charger and attach the clips to the power adapter. On some battery terminals, there may be an auxiliary connection to directly attach the ring terminals from the power adapter. You will also need a second power cord to reach all the way to the vehicle battery.

The third option is to use the trailer plug outlet on trucks wired for a trailer. The outlet must be wired with one “hot” connection to the positive battery terminal. The most common outlet is the RV7 type which has one round pin and six flat pins. You will need to purchase a mating plug and connect it to the power adapter. If the vehicle is already wired for a trailer, this is the best option as the dispenser always has power and you do not need to be run a power cord to the front of the vehicle.
